A gangster, jailed under charges of extortion and drug peddling, was allegedly killed by an inmate at Colvale prison in North Goa this morning, police said.
Ashpaq Ubbass Bengre was attacked with a sharp weapon by a fellow inmate at around 9 AM when he was being brought out of the jail to be taken to court in connection with a case, Inspector General of Prisons, Elvis Gomes told PTI.
"He was immediately taken to Goa Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead," he said.
The IG has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The gangster, in his late 40s, was booked by Karnataka, Goa and Chandigarh police for various offences like extortion and drug peddling, police sources said.
Raising the issue in the Goa Assembly, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said he has sought a report.
"I have asked for a detailed report as this is custodial death," Parsekar said.
Bengre was brought to Goa on a transfer remand after he was arrested by Chandigarh police for allegedly smuggling drugs into the country in May last year, police sources said.
