Jammu, Srinagar to have new solid waste management system

Jammu and Srinagar will soon have an integrated solid waste management system through which garbage will be collected and disposed of in a scientific and mechanised manner.
The Union Ministry of Urban Development has approved the the plan for setting up Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management facility for Jammu and Srinagar, officials said.
The waste management facility will be set up under Municipal Solid Waste Rules 2000 at a total cost of Rs 6952.70 lakh and Rs 9000.00 lakh in Jammu and Srinagar, respectively in a record time of 3 months, officials said.
The project implementation has been envisaged on scientific lines by incorporating an inbuilt service level benchmarking mechanism which would gauge the efficacy of the project before and after its implementation as per the various parameters, he said.
The parameters included household level coverage of SWM Services, efficiency for collection of municipal solid waste, extent of segregation of municipal solid waste, extent of municipal solid waste recovered, extent of scientific disposal of solid waste, efficiency in redressal of customer complaint and cost recovery of SWM services and efficiency in collection of charges.
The requirement of the total waste generated has been worked out after a detailed survey of waste generated areas in consonance with the guidelines of the Manual on Municipal Solid Waste Management.
The requirements of the equipment for the waste collection, storage and transportation have been worked out on the basis of projected population at the end of design year of five years, they said.
Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Project envisages scientific handling and disposal of generated solid waste and comprises of four components -- primary and secondary collection, transportation, segregation and processing of solid waste.
