Launching the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in Puducherry, Chief Minister N Rangasamy today lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intention to ensure the poor and underprivileged come up fast in life through the scheme and said it reflected his 'genuine' intentions.
"The Jan Dhan scheme, which envisages enabling all households to open accounts in banks without minimum balance, reflects how genuine the PM's intention are to ameliorate the lot of the poor and have-nots," he said after rolling out the scheme in the union territory, simultaneously with the Prime Minister in New Delhi.
Such schemes would go a long way to bring in prosperity in the lives of the people in urban and rural areas, he said.
The CM asked banks to ensure that all schemes meant for the poor are implemented without delay. Banks should also ensure that benefits of the financial aid for the aged reach them without any practical difficulty, he added.
He suggested that banks call upon the beneficiaries at their doorsteps and render services if branches were located at locations far away from homes of the beneficiaries.
Rangasamy said Puducherry had some years ago established the record of being the first in the country to achieve financial inclusion specifically covering rural areas. The Jan Dhan scheme had several added features of bringing in insurance cover, mobile banking facility and also a few other benefits to the account holders, he said.
