Japan today provided USD 3 million assistance to Nepal as its emergency response in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake as it underlined the need to quickly deliver the aid to people ahead of the monsoon.
The assistance provided through the World Food Programme will be utilised for procuring emergency food as well as essential logistics services for the entire humanitarian community, said a statement issued by the WFP Nepal.
"The challenge we are facing is reaching out to the people in dire need of assistance," said Japan's Ambassador to Nepal, Masashi Ogawa.
"This is a very crucial time to boost the delivering capacity to those in need before the rainy season," he said while handing over the aid to Nepalese authorities at the Embassy of Japan here.
Nepal is grappling with large-scale rehabilitation and reconstruction after the April 25 temblor flattened buildings, uprooted electric poles and brought down trees besides killing nearly 9,000 people.
A total of 247 aftershocks with 4 or more magnitude have kept people on the edge. The scared survivors have been forced to stay in the open, even though the monsoon is days away.
