A proposal by Uttar Pradesh culture department that Jauhar University here give its pandaal on rent to outsiders has not gone down well with the varisty, which has written to the state government objecting to the recommendation.
Mohammad Ali Jauhar University Registrar R A Qureshi in his letter to the culture department, said the varsity, managed by UP Cabinet minister Azam Khan, would not accept any conditional financial assistance which might push the existence of the institution in danger.
The state government had extended a grant of Rs 10 crore to the University for setting up a medical college.
"University management was mulling seriously to obtain permission from the government to return the grant worth Rs 10 crore for establishment of medical college affiliated with Jauhar University," he said in the letter.
"Grants are donations and conditions cannot be imposed thereon," he added.
The University, after availing financial assistance from the government, objected to holding programmes organised by institutions, individuals or other outfits in the pandaal here.
Any such provisions (renting the pandaal to outsiders, as proposed by state culture department) would make it an "arena of politics", Qureshi said in his letter, adding that "The change of governance (state government), if it occurs (in 2017), on certain odd situations might emerge. Hence, we shall not contemplate of hiring the auditorium for any other purposes through the intervention of the district collector.
