In the latest arrest for posting rumours, police said, 28-year-old Mani Selvam, a bank employee, hailing from Ottapidaram Taluk, Tuticorin and 42-year-old Bala Sundaram hailing from Pammal, Chennai, were arrested today.
"Fifty cases have been registered for posting malicious and false content regarding the health condition of the Chief Minister on the social media so far," a Central Crime Branch press release said, adding that posting such statements on social networking sites was a "violation of law".
The special team is working to identify those who had posted such "false and malicious" content on the social media, the release said.
"Public are requested to avoid making such statements in social networking sites.The offences are liable to be punished with rigorous imprisonment for more than seven years," the release said.
"Users of social media are advised not to spread false, malicious and motivated information regarding the health condition of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Stern action will be taken against the culprits, if any such content is noticed," it said.
