Knives were out in the "secular" camp today as BJP romped home in Assam, with JD(U) squarely blaming Congress for paving the way for the saffron party to form its maiden government in the north east and alleging that it was responsible for this "jolt" to "anti-BJP atmosphere" built after Bihar polls.
While Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar refrained from making any direct attack on Congress even as he attributed BJP's victory in Assam to the state's ruling party's decision not to go for an alliance in the assembly polls, JD(U) general secretary K C Tyagi went at it hammer and tongs.
"Congress is responsible for the victory of BJP in Assam election. Nitish Kumar had made all preparations for an alliance of Congress, JD(U), RJD, AIUDF and even AGP. Kumar had also met Rahul Gandhi in this regard. But this could not materialise.
"An anti-BJP atmosphere was built in the country after Bihar assembly election results last year in which the grand alliance of JD(U), RJD and Congress had defeated the BJP-led NDA. That suffered a jolt today due to Assam result for which the local leadership of Congress led by Tarun Gogoi is responsible," Tyagi told PTI.
He also said that the Assam election results clearly show that days of one or two major parties coming to power on their own have gone and it is the coalition which will work.
"It has clearly established that only an alliance will win polls henceforth. BJP stitched up a good alliance. Congress did not. BJP made all attempts to win the poll while the Congress made all attempts to lose it," Tyagi said.

Commenting on Assam assembly poll results, Nitish Kumar said,"In Assam, Congress did not go for an alliance before polls, whereas the BJP successfully stitched up an alliance."
"It (the result) was clear well before the elections. It was clearly visible from all sides," he said.
AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal had said a few days back on Twitter that if BJP wins because of a division of "secular" votes, it is Congress which will be responsible.
In a series of tweets on April 10, Ajmal had said, "Even before two days we approached Cong to come in to some understanding. But Congress rejected our offer. But unfortunately Congress did not agree to form an alliance with us. They rather are hell bent to divide secular votes.
"Nitish Kumarji, Lalu Yadavji also tried their best 2 work out a grand alliance including Congress, AGP, BPF, JDU, RJD & all other secular forces. We tried our best to form an alliance with the Congress, Prashant Kishore spoke to Rahul Gandhi in this regard," Ajmal, whose AIDUF has emerged as a force to reckon with in the state, had said.
