JDS leader and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today demanded a CBI inquiry into alleged encroachment of lakes in the city.
Participating in the debate on Urban Development department in the Assembly, he said about Rs six lakh crore worth land had been encroached in the state and in Bangalore alone, it was worth more than Rs two lakh crore.
Truth should come out regarding the extent of money looted in the name of lake development. To bring out illegalities about lake development, a CBI inquiry had to be ordered, Kumaraswamy said.
"We have remained silent for long" on the issue of lake encroachment in Bangalore, he said adding "We have to take strict action against illegal land encroachers."
Intervening, Speaker Kagodu Timmappa wanted to know about the demand of inquiry by CBI instead by state authorities.
Responding, Kumaraswamy alleged that several politically influential people were involved in the matter and officials had also colluded with land grabbers and hence the CBI inquiry was necessary.
He said he was not blaming the present government alone and it had happened during the tenure of successive governments.
"Time has now come to inquire into it and find a solution to the problem," he added.
