The film will be initially released in limited markets with expansions scheduled on October 17 and 24, reported Variety online.
The story is based on investigative journalist Gary Webb's stories alleging the CIA's involvement in the spread of crack cocaine in Los Angeles.
Renner, 43, will portray Webb's role in the movie, directed by Michael Cuesta.
Also starring in the film are Rosemarie DeWitt, Lucas Hedges, Robert Patrick, Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen, Paz Vega, Michael Kenneth Williams and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
The film has been produced by Scott Stuber, Renner and Naomi Despres.
