A jewel thief clad in a suit and swinging an umbrella in his hand walked into a top US jewellery store here and swiped two necklaces worth USD 90,000 in a daylight robbery, police has said.
The dapper thief asked to see two diamond necklaces at Tiffany's Fifth Avenue store and the clerk laid the pieces on the counter, they said.
The clerk turned away while the man looked over the pricey baubles, the New York Post reported.
Surveillance video caught the crook casually leaning on the counter on one elbow until the worker walked away.
He then scooped up the jewels and fled. The thief was still at large.
The incident happened last Friday at 3 pm (local time), police said.
Luxury jewelers in Midtown have been plagued by thefts this year.
On May 1, a thieving duo managed to pocket a high-end timepiece worth USD 177,000 from the Porsche Design store.
The same man and woman, working as a team, also stole two watches from the Bulgari store on Fifth Avenue on April 4, police said.
In April, cops arrested Tony Tacneau, 29, for allegedly pulling off three watch heists in Midtown and the Upper East Side.
During his crime spree, Tacneau ripped off two different Tourneau shops, as well as a Cartier boutique between February 23 and March 12, police said.
