: Jewels pledged by customers estimated to be worth crores of rupees and kept in safe deposit lockers in the branch of a public sector bank were burgled in neighbouring Tiruvallur district, police said today.

The robbery came to light when bank staff came to open the branch which was closed over the weekend, police said.

"We believe the jewels in the bank are worth crores of rupees. We are yet to evaluate the exact value of the jewels stolen," a police officer told PTI.

Police have collected CCTV footage from the bank and further investigation was on, he said.

A customer alleged bank officials were not providing any information of the details of the jewellery that were robbed.

"I have been waiting here for hours. I pledged my jewels and received a loan of Rs four lakh. I am in panic. I do not know whether my jewels are in there or not," he said.
