Jharkhand has achieved its target under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana with about 23.47 lakh new bank accounts opened after a survey of about 46.84 lakh households.

Mission Director for the implementation of the programme, N N Sinha, said a total of 23,47,653 new bank accounts have been opened since the launch of Jan Dhan Yojana on August 28 last year.

These new accounts were opened after surveying 46,84,282 households and the rest are already under the banking system, he said.

Sixty per cent of new account holders were issued RuPay cards, Sinha, who is also the Principal Secretary in the state Information Technology department, said yesterday.

With the target to achieve at least one bank account for every household by January 26, those who open accounts before that date would be entitled to life insurance cover of Rs 30,000.

Sinha, however, said all new account holders under the Yojana would be under accident insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh and an overdraft limit of Rs 5,000.

The target achieved by Jharkhand so far is more than that of Delhi's 19.5 lakh households and will continue to cover more families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had yesterday said about 11 crore new bank accounts have been opened till January 10 with a deposit of Rs 8,500 crore.
