The Jharkhand government has decided to free 221 prisoners, who have completed an average of 23 years in jail, on account of their good behaviour, an official release said here today.

The State Punishment Review Committee, during a meeting today, discussed a proposal for release of 233 prisoners, who are serving life term in various jails across the state, it said.

The committee has taken a decision to let out 221 inmates, the release said, adding that the remaining 12 cases would be taken up at the next meeting.

Out of the 221 prisoners, 104 belong to Scheduled Tribes and three are women.

Chief Minister Raghubar Das, who chaired the review committee meeting, said, "Injustice should not be done to anyone. The tribals of the state are simple people. At times, they commit crime unknowingly. Some of them also surrender on their own."
