The issue of death of three tribals from Jharkhand at a power plant in Punjab last week was raised in the Rajya Sabha today with a demand for Centre's intervention in directing Punjab government for grant of adequate compensation to their families.
Raising the matter during Zero Hour, Sanjiv Kumar (JMM) said three tribals had gone to Punjab to work at a power unit and died during service there and their bodies were sent back on February 23 to their native home alongwith Rs 20,000 as compensation.
"I want to know that some tribals are dying while on duty and the value of their life is only Rs 20,000. Is the value of their life just this much," said the JMM member.
Raising questions on why such inadequate compensation was granted, he said, "I demand that the Centre should talk to Punjab government to grant some adequate compensation."
He lamented that "while all natural resources were being taken out from the land where they lived, they are still not given their due and when they leave their house to work in a different place and die while doing their duty, they are not even paid adequate compensation".
