Jilted lover throws acid at girl for rejecting marriage offer
Press Trust of India New Delhi A 22-year-old woman got burnt badly and was unable to open her eyes after a man and his sister allegedly hurled acid at her for refusing his marriage proposal in east Delhi's Gandhinagar area, police said today.
The girl has been admitted to GTB hospital with 30 per cent burn injuries and is recuperating.
Radhe and sister Anita, residents of Ghaziabad, are known to the victim. He befriended the girl in Haridwar last year during a visit, said a police officer.
Radhe developed a one-sided affection for the girl and proposed to her. The proposal was, however, reportedly turned down, police said.
Infuriated by the rejection, the accused with the help of his sister, allegedly threw acid on the victim at around 9.30 PM yesterday, said the officer.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal visited the victim.
"Maliwal met the Medical Superintendent to access the status of the victim and found shockingly that her care had been neglected. It was learnt that her bandages had not been changed since 10 PM last night," said a senior DCW officer.
After the Commission's intervention, the victim was shifted to a private ward. The Commission shall ensure that the victim gets proper treatment and that due justice is served, said a senior DCW official.
"Girl burnt badly, eyes not opening. Met MS GTB, hv got girl shifted to private ward. DCW will ensure proper treatment to the girl n justice," Maliwal later tweeted.
