The incident occurred this morning when the accused, identified as Afzal, entered into a dental clinic where the victim, Deepika, has been working as an assistant, and asked her to accept his love proposal, said Circle Inspector Chandrasekhar.
As soon as Deepika spurned Afzal's advances, he emptied a bottle of petrol, which he was carrying with him, on Deepika and tried to set her afire, he said.
The girl immediately ran out of the clinic and raised an alarm following which people gathered and overpowered Afzal who then tried to slit one of his wrists with blade, he said, adding, he sustained minor injuries.
A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC has been registered against Afzal who is arrested.
