The JGLS came ahead of the Legal Services Clinic of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, and Antashchetana of Chanakya National Law University, Patna, to bag the 2017 Herbert Smith Freehills' Community Engagement Award.
The law school affiliated to O P Jindal Global University (OPJGU) won the award in a programme that invited entries from individuals or teams of students across all Indian law schools to showcase their contributions in their communities.
OPJGU Vice-Chancellor C Raj Kumar said the award was a recognition for the outstanding work of the faculty members and students of university towards legal empowerment and social justice.
The award, which recognises and champions meaningful community engagement activity of law students in India to bring sustainable social impact by using their legal knowledge, comes with a cash prize of 2000 British Pound.

Apart from the shortlisted entries, various other institutions had also submitted their entries, including the Legal Aid and Awareness Committee of National Law University Jodhpur, and ODRways -- a tech initiative of National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata.
Entries were judged on the basis of four key parameters -- social impact, project sustainability, innovation and presentation.
