JIPMER to augment green cover by planting saplings

JIPMER, a centrally administered premier medical institution here has drawn up a plan to launch a massive programme to augment its green cover.
A release from the institute said today that as many as 10,500 saplings of different species including fruit bearing trees and vegetables would be planted in a phased manner on the precincts of JIPMER from tomorrow.
In the first phase the areas that remain unused all along on the premises of Kendriya Vidyalaya within JIPMER campus would be covered and in the next two phases would cover a large extent of land and would be covered by September next year, the release said.
Director of JIPMER would launch the programme tomorrow and the maintenance of the green environment would be taken up by staff, students and faculty of the institute. The purpose of the programme is to ensure that air pollution was kept at bay. The institute is situated on the national highways of Puducherry-Tindivanam route.
Medicinal plants would also form part of the saplings that would be planted under the programme, the release said.
