A sum of Rs 258 crore would be spent initially for the purpose of introducing new services apart from upgrading the range of facilities already available in the institute, Director T S Ravikumar said.

Established around five decades ago here, JIPMER emerged as a pioneer in the field of medical education and is considered among the top-five medical institutes in India.

"Various big projects like introduction of Electronic Patient Health Card, augmentation of facilities and expansion of the super speciality block will be taken up under the modernisation plan," he said.

"We would like to ensure that JIPMER emerged as hospital of the future," Ravikumar said, adding that it needed 900 more health professionals, including doctors and nurses.

JIPMER also intends to start a school of Public health in the Twelfth Plan (2012-17).
