An unofficial tribal jirga representing elders from the Mehsud tribesmen today met the Mehsud Taliban chief Khan Said to broker a peace agreement between Pakistan government and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Major General Asim Bajwa, the Director General of Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) had recently expressed total dissociation with the said jirga saying he had no knowledge about its formation at official level and maintained that operation against the militants would continue unabated in North Waziristan Agency.
He also denied formation of any such jirga by the army for negotiating a peace deal with the Mehsud tribe.
As per reports, a 11-member jirga which was announced a few ago in Tank has started negotiations for peaceful settlement of conflict between the government and the TTP.
The jirga held an initial meeting with the Mehsud Taliban and would put forth their suggestions to the officials.
Headed by Ikramuddin, father-in-law of the slain TTP founder and chief Baitullah Mehsud, the jirga comprises of ten other key Mehsud tribal elders.
Reports said that the jirga had been empowered to hold talks with all Mehsud factions, including the groups of Khan Said and Shehryar.
It will also discuss with two little known factions - Shamim group and Hazratullah group also known as Toora Shpa (Black Night) - the matter of a peace agreement.
