Built at over Rs 1,700 crore investment, the Durg unit of JK Lakshmi Cement in Chhattisgarh has started production.
"Spread over 1,200 acres, the facility has been set up at a cost of over Rs 1,700 crore", and it has started production earlier this week, JK Lakshmi Cement said in a statement today.
The plant has an installed capacity of nearly 2.7 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). Following commissioning, installed cement making capacity of the company now stands at 9.3 mtpa.
A part of the USD 4 billion JK Organisation, JK Lakshmi's greenfield Durg unit would produce various grades of building material such as ordinary portland cement, portland pozzolana cement and slag cement.
The Durg project had in 2013 attracted wrath of the local people who had set on fire a portion of the under-construction plant, reportedly angered by the reluctance of the company to give jobs to project-affected persons. This caused serious damages at the construction site.
Shailendra Chouksey, Whole-time Director of JK Lakshmi Cement expressed gratitude to the tenacity and determination of the Durg team through the construction phase of this plant.
"He is optimistic that the company's latest offering Pro+ cement, which will be manufactured in the newly commissioned plant, will be the highest selling cement in the East," the release said.
The commencement of the Durg plant is in line with the concept of inclusive growth and Prime Minister's "Make in India" campaign to boost economy and growth of the region, the company said.
