"Majority of police force is completely committed, dedicated and loyal to the objectives of the police department and the state government," Director General of Police Ashok Prasad told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

He was responding to the reported claim made by former state Governor SK Sinha, that half of the policemen in Jammu and Kashmir were sympathetic towards militants.

Addressing a lecture on "Kashmir: Genesis and Solutions" at Mangalayatan University in Aligarh yesterday, Sinha said state police had 50 per cent militant sympathisers.

"We should take note of this ground reality," Sinha said.

Prasad said there might be some black sheep in the department but "it was a case with every other force."

Inspector General of Police Kashmir SM Sahai said the work done by the state police in the last three years was evidence enough that the cops were at the forefront of fighting militancy and separatism in the state.

"The separatist leaders have threatened the policemen and officers which makes it clear who is taking on them," Sahai said.

Asserting that police department did not need to give any clarifications, the IGP said if 50 per cent of the force would have been militant sympathisers, the department would not have achieved the kind of success it had.

Sinha had a five-year tenure as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir which ended with Amarnath land row agitation in 2008.
