JK rights, accountability panel heads' tenure now to be 5 yrs
Press Trust of India Jammu The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council today passed two bills to increase the tenure of the chairpersons of state's Human Rights Commission and Accountability Commission to five years.
The move comes in the wake of shortage of retired judges eligible for the posts in the two commissions.
With the passing of the amendment bills, the tenure of the two commissions' heads has increased to five years from the existing period of three years.
The amendment also makes the upper age limit for their eligibility to 75 years.
Two more bills, earlier passed by the Lower House, were also passed by the Legislative Council.
The bills which received the assent of the House include the bill to amend the Jammu & Kashmir Civic Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2014; the bill to amend Jammu & Kashmir Protection of Human Rights Act, 1997; the bill to amend Jammu & Kashmir Accountability Commission Act, 2002, the bill to amend the Kashmir and Jammu University Act, 1969.
All the bills were passed by a voice vote.
