With winter settling in Rajasthan, Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has started building six new shelters and renovating existing ones for the homeless in the city.
Of the 41 night shelters, 20 are permanent structures equipped with quilts, food, water and other facilities. Six more permanent shelters have been planned, the setting up of which would taken up on war footing, Chairperson of JMC's Public Welfare Committee Kusum Yadav said.
Six temporary shelters have been erected at different locations for beggars and homeless as winter days set in while nine temporary homes would be completed by this weekend, she said.
Over 2,000 poor people live in these shelter homes during the winter season every month from December to March, Yadav said.
Meanwhile, Jaipur recorded the coldest night with mercury slipping to 11.3 degrees Celsius, a few notches less than yesterday when it was 11.5 degrees Celsius, a MeT report said.
The hill station of Mount Abu recorded the lowest temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius and in the plains, Jawai Dam recorded the minimum of 7 degrees Celsius.
Churu recorded minimum temperature of 9.7 degrees Celsius followed by Jalore 10.7 degrees Celsius, Ganganagar and Pilani 11.5 degrees Celsius each.
The minimum temperature ranged between 11.7 and 17.6 degrees Celsius at several places including Ajmer, Kota, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Barmer.
No significant change in winter pattern would be expected in next 24 hours in the state, the MeT forecast said.
