The Academic Council of JNU today approved several proposals including adoption of a UGC gazette notification(May 5,2016) for admissions, amid alleged attempts to "disrupt" meeting of the Council by "a handful of faculty members," said the university's Registrar.
The Council meeting on December 23 was adjourned and the remaining items on agenda were passed today.
"As the AC meeting was going on smoothly a handful of faculty members tried their best to disrupt the meeting by constantly shouting at the chairperson(VC) while he was speaking," said a press statement by Registrar Pramod Kumar.
He further alleged that "someone from the group of members" called in students protesting outside who "broke open the latch of the meeting room door" and came inside and "shouted at" the chairperson.
However, by the time it happened the Council meeting was already over and important decisions were taken. Some Council members have demanded the VC M Jagadesh Kumar to take appropriate action against the Council members and students who tried to disrupt the meeting, he added.
However, the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) accused the VC of "sabotaging" the meeting and "putting aside the concerns of Council members.
"VC sabotaged the entire meeting, by putting aside the concerns raised by the AC members regarding the errors and falsification in the minutes of the 141st AC meeting," alleged the students union.
It also alleged that the 5th May notification of UGC on admissions in MPhil and PhD courses has been passed by him "authoritatively".
"The press statement by JNU today has further falsified the entire events by putting the blame for disruption( of meeting) on the faculty members," JNUSU alleged.
A "small section of students" had given a "unilateral call" for protest outside the AC meeting and they entered the hall when the meeting was already over, it added.
