Breaking away from tradition, the Jawaharlal Nehru University vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar declined to sign the certificates for the varsity's election commission today.
While EC members and the JNUSU president said that it is an insult to the institution which has been conducting the students union elections, Kumar said that the certificates will be signed by the chairman of grievance redressal cell and one should not be conditioned by tradition.
Ishita Manna, the chief election commissioner of JNU students union elections said, The VC declined to sign the certificates.
It was an insult to all of us and also an attack on the institution itself which has set such a high standard by conducting the elections with all fairness and without any problem.
JNUSU president, Mohit Kumar Pandey said, Rejecting all machinations of Sanghi administration either it was EVM or changing the venue of voting, the EC went ahead with the strong pro-student spirit and showed how an actual students union election should look like.
But our VC, who is more than eager to sign permission for entry of police in the campus, refuses to sign the certificates, Pandey alleged
He (VC) thinks he can run the university without students and wants to crush all spaces where we students are building an alternative model of students politics.
But the VC has a different take on the issue. He said "The chairman of GRC will issue it. Let us not be conditioned by tradition. Change is a constant.
