The 'Chronicle' helmer has been roped in to direct a stand-alone film from the superhit franchise besides the new trilogy, being helmed by JJ Abrams.
"We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family. He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement.
Trank said the sci-fi franchise by George Lucas has been a part of his childhood.
The director is currently working on 'The Fantastic Four' for 20th Century Fox.
