Journalists from China's dominant official media lead the lonely hearts list as late shifts and demanding work leave them with no time for dating, according to a new survey.
A recent report by matchmaking website zhenai.Com revealed that journalism is the "most single" occupation in China as 4.8 per cent of media professionals are single, the highest among all professions.
The report was based on an annual survey of the single population, Zou Yuqing, a publicity official for zhenai.Com, told state-run China Daily. The poll covered about 10,000 members of the matchmaking site.
According to the China Population Employment Statistics Yearbook, single Chinese men and women aged 18 to 43 numbered nearly 180 million in 2011, and 60 million of them lived in urban areas.
Asked why they remain single, 50. 9 per cent of the respondents blamed their small social circles, while 24.5 per cent said they did not know how to get along with the opposite sex.
Some media workers interviewed by China Daily said low salaries and tight working schedules left them with no time for dating.
The Chinese media, which remains under the control of the government, has expanded rapidly in recent times with stepped up investments.
