Jindal Steel & Power Ltd today said it has commissioned a 1.4 million tonne per annum Rebar mill at Sohar in Oman at an investing of USD 190 million.
The unit, largest in Gulf and African region, along with the existing 2 MTPA steel melting spot (SMS) makes JSPL's Jindal Shadeed, the largest integrated steelmaker in Oman.
The capacity will significantly strengthen Oman's domestic production capacity to substitute dependence on imports for the construction sector in the country, a company statement said here.
"The commissioning catapults Jindal Shadeed amongst the top 3 integrated steelmakers in the fast-growing Arabian Peninsula," JSPL Chairman Naveen Jindal said.
The technology for the mill has been provided by Danieli of Italy, a leading supplier of equipment and plants to metals industry.
Jindal Shadeed CEO NA Ansari said: "Despite a critical steel market, we have established ourselves as a formidable player in the region. With the new Rebar Mill, we would further strengthen our leadership position in Oman and GCC".
JSPL's Jindal Shadeed had earlier set up the largest Electric Arc Furnace in the Arabian Peninsula. It is the only steelmaker in GCC to export special quality billets to Europe for automotive applications.
