Following the controversy over a police crackdown on protesting students two months ago, Jadavpur University has decided to form a fact-finding committee to investigate all such cases where police had to be called inside the campus.
The three-member committee comprising persons of repute from outside the university would be appointed soon, Vice- Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti said.
"They will investigate into why was police called inside the campus in 2005, 2007, 2010 and this year in 2014. All allegations related to this will be examined. We are doing this to ensure transparency in the functioning of the institute," he told PTI.
The committee would submit its report to the VC within 45 days of being notified.
On the night of September 17, Chakrabarti had called police in the campus to break a gherao by students protesting over a molestation incident.
Holding the VC responsible for the police crackdown against them, the students have since then boycotted many classes, brought out rallies and even voted against him in a referendum on his removal.
"I also want to have a feedback on whether the decision to call police was right. I am myself accountable as I take salary for my job," Chakrabarti said when asked what prompted him to set up the committee.
