The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) of Ranaghat Court today went to a police station in the Nadia district and sent a woman detained there by the police to a home in Krishnagar.
The court has also asked police to file a detailed report on the entire incident.
Debashis Chakraborty, lawyer of one Gobinda Biswas, who had moved court today in an effort to rescue the woman from Hanskhali police station where she was detained since December 23, said "The woman had come from Delhi to the house of Gobinda Biswas at Mayurhat within the limits of Hanskhali police station on December 19.
"Local residents suddenly grew suspicious and informed the police about the woman's presence in the locality. On the basis of that information the police brought the woman from Biswas' house on December 23 and detained her till today without any reason or complaint against her," he said.
Chakraborty said Biswas tried to bring the woman back home, but the police refused to let her go.
"Instead, they demanded bribe from Biswas and even threatened him that they would book the girl under the Foreigner's Act," Chakraborty said adding, the woman was known to one of Gobinda's daughters.
