An elephant died after falling into a 'nullah', swollen by rain water, at Karba Tea Estate in Binnaguri Cantonment area of Jalpaiguri district today.
Wildlife Warden Seema Chowdhury said the elephant was part of a herd which was passing by the area when it fell into the 'nullah' last night.
With the delay in arrival of 'kunki' elephant (trained elephant by forest department) and lack of immediate rescue tools, the pachyderm was lying in the 'nullah' for hours in half-submerged state before it died at around 4:30 PM today.
The elephant herd which tried to lift it last night, today left the spot as villagers assembled.
The carcass was being referred for autopsy to know the exact cause of death.
