The councillors of Junagadh Municipal Corporation in the district were seen today loudly arguing even when the national anthem was playing at the end of a meeting of the civic body today.
The last general board meeting of JMC, controlled by Congress, was held today. Municipal elections are slated to be held next month.
The meeting turned stormy as it came against the backdrop of eight Congress councillors switching sides and joining BJP.
As heated arguments broke out between members of the two parties, mayor Lakhabhai Parmar announced the meeting ended and asked the staff to play the national anthem.
But the tv footage from news channels showed the councillors of both the parties kept talking. Later, the two parties blamed each other for disrespecting the anthem.
"Our councillors were answering the allegations levelled by Congress and suddenly the mayor ordered to play the national anthem," said Mahendra Mashru of BJP who is the leader of opposition in the corporation.
He claimed BJP councillors stopped talking immediately but not those from Congress.
However, mayor Parmar, who belongs to Congress, said the national anthem is always played when the board meeting gets over but BJP corporators continued arguing.
