Gupta, a faculty member of IIT Delhi's mechanical engineering department, is one of the senior most professors on the campus and could take charge as Shevgaonkar's notice period, following his resignation, ends on June 11.
However, as Gupta is on leave, the board has suggested the name of Anshul Kumar of the computer science department to take charge till Gupta resumes duty, sources in the HRD Ministry said.
Shevgaonkar had resigned last December amid reports that he was under pressure from the Ministry on a controversial move to set up an International Institute of Technology Research Academy (IITRA) in Mauritius.
An MoU was signed between IIT-Delhi and Mauritius Research Council for setting up of the academy.
The Ministry had delayed accepting his resignation even as the board of governors in March this year recommended to the Ministry to accept his resignation.
