Kairana LS, Noorpur Assembly bypoll on May 28, counting May 31

The bypolls to the Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh will be held on May 28, an election office spokesperson said here today.

Counting of votes for both the consitituencies will be held on May 31, the spokesperson said.

A notification will be issued on May 3 and the last date for filing of nomination is May 10. Scrutiny will be taken up the next day while the last date of withdrawal is May 14, he said.

The Kairana Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after the death of BJP MP Hukum Singh in February, while the Noorpur Assembly seat fell vacant when sitting BJP MLA Lokendra Singh Chauhan died in a road accident the same month.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer L Venkateshwar Lu will visit Saharanpur and Shamli districts tomorrow to take stock of poll preparations.

Kairana parliamentary constituency comprises five assembly segments, three in Shamli and two in Saharanpur district.

The EC has set up 883 polling centres in five assembly constituencies -- Shamli, Thanabhawan, Kairana (all in Shamli district) and Gangoh and Nukar in Saharanpur district.

As many as 16,095,80 voters including 7,36,420 women would exercise their franchise in the coming bypoll in Kairana.

Political parties including BJP, SP, RLD and Congress have started poll preparations.

State president of Samajwadi Party, Naresh Uttam Patel visited Kairana yesterday and asked party workers to be ready for the polls. Ruling BJP ministers have also been visiting the constituency.

The Election Commission today announced that bypolls to four Lok Sabha seats, including Uttar Pradesh's Kairana, will take place on May 28.

The bypolls will be held for Bhandara-Gondiya and Palghar in Maharashtra, Kairana, and Nagaland Lok Sabha seats.
