Kalamboli iron & steel market yard in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, which generates monthly trading turnover of around Rs 1,000 crore, has demanded basic amenities from the government for smooth running of business.
"There is scarcity of basic amenities, such as pathetic conditions of internal roads, street lights, uneven supply of potable waters, drainage etc. In the monsoon season, the situation becomes bad to worse due to severe water logging in the market yard," Rajeev Khandelwal, member of MMR Iron & Steel Market committee said in a statement here.
The market yard generates monthly trading turnover of around Rs 1,000 crore, and the substantial sum goes to the state government, but we are denied of basic amenities, Khandelwal said.
The wholesale iron & steel market was shifted to Kalamboli market yard from 1989 in order to decongest South Mumbai. It is said to be the biggest iron & steel market in Asia, having approximately 1,940 plots spread over 302 hectares.
The market yard was built by CIDCO and it has been charging service charge from plot holders. Even transfer charges go to CIDCO. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is the governing body for Kalamboli market yard.
Under MMRDA, The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Iron & Steel Market Committee (MMR Iron & Steel market Committee) is looking after day to day affairs. Presently, MMR Iron & Steel Market Committee is not having full time Chief Executive Officer since November 2013.
"The procedure of transfer of plots has been literally at a standstill for the last 2 years. CIDCO has stipulated cumbersome provision that plot holders should develop the plots within 13 years of purchase or else the registration would be cancelled. This provision is in total violation to the resolution passed by CIDCO in the year 1980 stipulating that there was no time limit for developments of plots," Khandelwal said.
Joint Kalamboli Steel market Committee has a sent memorandum demanding appointment of full time CEO for MMR Iron & Steel Market Committee, road repair works, better power supply and additional water connections.
