The Congress district committee in violence-hit Karbi Anglong district has demanded a separate state carved out of Assam on the lines of Telangana.
The Congress committee today submitted a memorandum to party President Sonia Gandhi through AICC General Secretary Avinash Pandey in the district headquarters Diphu demanding a separate Karbi Anglong.
Another organisation Karbi Anglong Autonomous State Demand Committee (KAASDCOM), which has since 1986 been demanding an autonomous state within Assam under Article 244(A), also submitted a memorandum to Pandey for Gandhi.
The AICC General Secretary along with APCC President Bhubaneswar Kalita held a meeting with the district Congress members and promised to apprise the party high command about their demand.
Condemning the torching of the district Congress office during the violence this week, Pandey appealed for peace pointing out problems could be solved through the democratic process.
The AICC General Secretary is on a fact finding visit in Assam to study the statehood demands of various ethnic communities in the state.

On his arrival in Guwahati yesterday, Pandey held a meeting with state Congress leaders who informed him about the statehood demands of Karbi, Dimasa, Koch Rajbongshi and Bodo communities, APCC chief spokesman Mehdi Alam Bora told PTI today.
Pandey will tomorrow go to Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts, where the demand for separate Kamtapur and Bodoland states are getting strident, before he submits his findings to Sonia Gandhi on his return to Delhi.
The demands for separate states in Assam have recently erupted in large-scale violence and agitations with the hill district of Karbi Anglong witnessing the killing of two persons and injury to several others.
