The winter session of the Karnataka legislature Assembly will be held in Belagavi from December 9 to December 20, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra said here today.
"The winter session of the state legislature assembly will be held in Belagavi from December 9 to December 20," he told reporters following a cabinet meeting here.
The government will also hold a special cabinet meeting at Gulbarga in Hyderabad-Karnataka region on December 27, Jayachandra said.
Talking about ban on tobacco, he said unlike other states, Karnataka will not impose ban until the Supreme Court gives its final verdict on the issue.
"As much as 40 per cent of India's tobacco production is done in Karnataka and we have to keep the interests of tobacco growers in mind, and hence it would be wise for us not to ban the product," he said.
The Supreme Court on August 14 had issued notice to the Centre and the states on a PIL seeking complete ban on smoking products in the country.
Jayachandra said the government has proposed to provide compensation of Rs 9,000 a hectare to onion growers in the districts of Chitradurga, Davangere, Gadag and Dharwad.
The government will spend Rs 36 to 40 crore in this regard, he added.
