Hearing a PIL filed by a social worker Bhavani Prasad, a Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen also issued notices to the excise commissioner, DGP and city commissioner of police.

The bench directed the government to submit within two weeks its report mentioning the action taken by it on the matter.

The petitioner had sought action against wine shops, bars and restaurants violating excise laws by selling liquor at rates higher than the MRP and allowing customers to drink at the shops.

He had also sought action against bars, restaurants and "dhabas" (roadside eateries) selling liquor without licence and serving them to customers without refreshments, which is mandatory as per excise rules.

The petitioner was given the liberty by the court to revive the same PIL filed by him two years ago in case no action was taken by government.
