Referring to the controversy surrounding 'Mathorubagan' writer Perumal Murugan, Karunanidhi said it was followed up by the attack on Murugesan in Karur, where he was allegedly assaulted by some persons for his reference to a particular community in his book.
"I hope government and police will ensure that the issue does not aggravate and bring peace. At the same time, government should ensure writers' freedom of expression and their personal safety," Karunanidhi, himself a writer, said in a release.
He had later said in a Facebook update that 'the writer Perumal Murugan is dead,' prompting debates on freedom of expression.
Later, Murugesan was assaulted in Karur district for his reference about a particular community in his novel.
