Decrying the recent attack on upcoming author 'Puliyur' Murugesan, DMK President M Karunanidhi today urged the state government to ensure freedom of expression of writers and their personal safety.
Referring to the controversy surrounding 'Mathorubagan' writer Perumal Murugan, Karunanidhi said it was followed up by the attack on Murugesan in Karur, where he was allegedly assaulted by some persons for his reference to a particular community in his book.
"I hope government and police will ensure that the issue does not aggravate and bring peace. At the same time, government should ensure writers' freedom of expression and their personal safety," Karunanidhi, himself a writer, said in a release.
Perumal Murugan had earned the ire of locals following his controversial depiction of Tiruchengode area in his work 'Mathorubagan', and had apologized later in a conciliatory meeting convened by government officials.
He had later said in a Facebook update that 'the writer Perumal Murugan is dead,' prompting debates on freedom of expression.
Later, Murugesan was assaulted in Karur district for his reference about a particular community in his novel.
