While remaining mum on the reported rift between his sons Union Minister M K Alagiri and party Treasurer M K Stalin on the succession issue, the 89 year-old leader in a letter to the partymen admitted that local differences had resulted in factionalism.

Karunanidhi's message to the partymen comes amidst reports that all was not well in the party, known for its discipline, thanks to the sibling rivalry.

The party had recently appointed a committee to look into differences post the drubbing in the last assembly elections and Karunanidhi had said those who worked against the party would be constantly monitored.

In the letter, Karunanidhi said party MP JK Riteish had written to him assuring that no "regrettable incident" would happen in the faction-ridden Ramanathapuram unit and the party workers would strive to keep him happy.

"I firmly believe that the July 4 protest will help end the factionalism in some districts borne out of local differences and friction," he said.

The DMK has called for the fill the jail agitation to protest the AIADMK government's "atrocities and foisting of cases against party leaders and workers during its one year in office", he said.
