The Crime Branch today questioned Goa's Leader of Opposition, Chandrakant Kavlekar over his suspected links with the alleged matka gambling trade in the state, after objectionable material was recovered from his house during a search.
Kavlekar, who is facing an inquiry by Anti-Corruption Bureau in connection with a case of disappropriate asset against him, was also booked under the Goa Gambling Act, after police recovered several slips used in matka gambling, from his residence in South Goa's Betul during the search.
The search was conducted last week in connection with the disappropriate asset case.
"He was questioned for almost one and half hour. Several questions were asked to him. Basically we are trying to know his links with the matka gambling business," a senior crime branch official told PTI.
The senior Congress arrived at the crime branch office at 11 am with an interim anticipatory bail order from the District and Sessions Court in Margao.
The orders restricted him from being arrested by the crime branch.
"I am clean. I am completely cooperating with the police. I have nothing to hide," Kavlekar said before rushing into his vehicle after coming out of the crime branch office.
The ACB had last Friday filed an FIR against the three time legislator and his wife Savitri under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly amassing wealth not proportionate to his income.
