Amid speculation about his future, Pakistan's powerful army chief Gen Ashfaq Kayani today met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed the appointment of the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
The two leaders discussed the appointment of a replacement for Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (JCSC) Chairman, Gen Khalid Shameem Wynne, who is set to retire on Saturday, said a report on the website of Dawn newspaper.
Wynne's successor has not been named as yet, adding to speculation about the issue.
The decision appears to have narrowed down to two choices - a JCSC chief from either the army or the navy, the report said.
If the army retains the post, the next JCSC chief will most likely be Lt Gen Haroon Aslam, currently the most senior general in the army. Naval chief Admiral Asif Sandila could be the candidate if the position goes to the navy.
