"Ravi Shankar came to the attention of the western world through his connection with the Beatles in 1966. He became a worldwide superstar composing music for movies both eastern and western. He performed at Woodstock, and collaborated with the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin and jazz saxophonist John Coltrane to bridge the musical gap," Vaz said.

"The great Sitar legend Ravi Shankar has left a void in the world of classical music," he said.

"He will live forever in our hearts through his music."

Joginder Sanger, Chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, London, also mourned the death of Shankar saying "the Bhavan is deeply saddened by the passing away of such a great man - great not only as an artiste, but also as a great human being.

"He will be deeply missed and our thoughts go out to his wife Sukanya and his family."
