As part of this, hundreds of meetings were organised in every nook and cranny of the state where the party cadres and sympathisers took solemn pledge to oppose the forces trying to infuse communal and divisive tendencies into Kerala society.

Addressing the gatherings, party leaders cautioned people against renewed efforts being made by "communal and reactionary forces" trying to make an assault on the Kerala society, which has undergone a radical transformation from feudal and colonial days due to movements spearheaded by reform leaders and the Communists.

Addressing a gathering at Panankara near here, CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan slammed the UDF government, arguing its policies posed a grim danger not only to the secular fabric of the society but also to the state's widely acclaimed achievements like universal education and healthcare.

He said organisations like RSS were out to capitalise on recent developments like unity movement launched by community outfits like Nair Service Society and Sree Narayana Dharma Parimapalana Yogam, representing the Nair and Ezhava communities respectively.

Following up the enlightenment created by reform leaders in the last century, the Communist movement had contributed significantly for laying the foundation of the present Kerala society, Vijayan said.

The Communists would always be in the forefront of the fight against the reactionary forces to undermine this foundation but such a new movement also required support of all progressive and democratic minded people in the state.
