An ex-gratia relief of Rs 10 lakh would be provided to the kin of student Agosh Chakma, who was killed in police firing on August 4 this year during an agitation in Mizoram's Chawngte town, Mizoram Home Minister R Lalzirliana said today.
Replying to a question from Lalruatkima of the Mizo National Front (MNF) in the Assembly, Lalzirliana said that Chakma was killed after a magistrate gave an order to the police to "fire in the air" to disperse a mob which had attacked the Chawngte Police Station.
"An agreement between the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) authorities and the joint NGOs decided that Chakma's family would be given Rupees 10 lakh of which Rs 3.5 lakh was already disbursed to the kin of the slain student," he said.
He added that the magisterial inquiry by Lawngtlai district magistrate J Hmingthanmawia has submitted its report which was forwarded to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Intervening during Question Hour, Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla accused the leaders and members of the Mizoram Chakma Students Union (MCSU) and the Central Young Chakma Association (CYCA) of instigating violence with politically motivated intentions.
Lal Thanhawla said that the CYCA top leader is a government employee and stringent action would be taken against him in the future.
He said that changing of the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the CADC was not due to the incident but due to the fact that the then CEM lost majority in the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) which elected another person as its leader.
