Congress leader Ajay Maken, who will lead the party's campaign for Delhi Assembly polls, today termed as "gross political opportunism" the decision of Kiran Bedi to join BJP and said she and Arvind Kejriwal "used" Anna Hazare for political gains and "backstabbed" him.
He said Bedi had described India Against Corruption movement, which was led by Hazare and seen enthusiastic people's participation, "neither anti-Congress, nor pro-BJP" but she "betrayed" the trust of the people associated with it.
"Bedi, who had on record criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed the IAC movement to be neither anti-Congress, nor pro-BJP, today betrayed the trust of the people associated with the IAC campaign," he said in a staement.
Attacking Kejriwal, he said he had vowed not to enter politics during the Hazare-led movement but deserted the campaign at the first chance of exposure to power.
"They used Anna Hazare for personal political gains and backstabbed him later," he charged.
Maken also releaed a 2013 tweet of Bedi in which she had said "One day NaMo will need to respond with clarity about riots massacre. Despite Courts clearing him so far."
It proves that the anti-corruption movement led by Hazare had the wrong people steering it, he said.
The movement had sparked protests against the then Congress-led UPA government.
