Kissinger, an acclaimed writer and political scientist, also said President Donald Trump needs to define the US role in order to answer concerns that it has given up some of its global leadership role.
Talking through a video link from the US with the WEF audience here, Kissinger said the traditional global order is disintegrating and new players from Asia and developing world are coming in.
On what advice he would give to Trump, he said the President would have to find where the US can help and gain from creation of a new international order.
About how he would like the US relationship with Russia to evolve, Kissinger said Trump has indicated that he would prefer a less confrontational and more political approach.

Kissinger said he agrees with Trump's stance, given that Russia's impact on Asia and Middle East and some parts of Europe has been significant.
Kissinger said that the Middle East is the coffin of the international order.
He also said that Atlantic partnership is of great significance but it probably needs to be reconstructed and noted that nothing can be obsolete in reference to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation).
What is important is how a partnership works in the face of challenges and that is an important task and the principal task, he noted.
