Kongunadu Jananayaka Katchi (KJK) today urged Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to implement the long-pending Avinashi-Athikadavu flood canal project as promised during her election campaign.
In a letter to Jayalalithaa, the party convenor G K Nagaraj said the underground water level in Kongu region, comprising 12 districts, had already gone below 1,000 feet.
Moreover, of the 570 water bodies, 500 had already become arid and waiting for water, particularly in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode Districts, he claimed.
The project if implemented would not only benefit the farming community, but also fulfill the drinking water needs of the several people, he noted.
Tamil Nadu government had in February this year granted administrative sanction for Rs 3.27 crore to take up preliminary works of the project to seek approval from the Centre.
