Member Mayor-in Council (MMIC) Revenue Debabrata Majumder told the monthly House of the KMC that till November this year the KMC has collected Rs 362 crore as property tax compared to Rs 317 crore in the same period last year.

We have set a target to collect a minimum of Rs 700 crore property tax in this financial year, he said adding it could rise to Rs 1500 crore if we are able to complete the assessment of all the unassessed properties in the newly added areas like Jadavpur, Behala in the KMC area.

The MMIC-Revenue told the House that there are around 6.5 lakh assesses in the KMC records while another 70,000 in the newly added areas of the KMC are unassessed.

The Assessment Collection has been asked to complete the assessment in all the multi-storied buildings in the added areas like Jadavpur, Behala as fast as they can, he informed.

Even the Assessment Collection department has been asked to take the help of the local councillors in completing the assessment of the unassessed buildings.

Majumder claimed that the KMC owns around Rs 2000 crore property tax due from 2.62 lakh assesses who are not paying taxes due to litigation.

The MMIC-Revenue said the KMC want to introduce a new proposal of rental attachment. In the rental attachment scheme the KMC would deduct the property tax from the rent paid by the tenant to the landlord or owner of commercial property as the landlords or owners of many commercial properties are not paying property taxes.
